The routes to the desert of Morocco

These are some of the Morocco desert tours that we do and that we can adapt to your liking.

In fact, there are as many ways to get to the desert as there are ways to Rome.

The most common is to travel from Marrakech to the desert through the Atlas and the route of the Kasbahs. It is the great south tour. We can also go through the desert towards Fez to finish visiting its huge medina. Or combine the route to the desert of Morocco and the imperial cities tour.

The destination par excellence is the Merzouga desert, in the southeast of the country, and the dunes of Zagora a good alternative.

You will see that the routes to the Moroccan desert can start from Marrakech, Fez, Casablanca, Tangier or any other starting point that you tell us.

In all of them you are accompanied by the landscape and customs that gradually change until they take you to your final destination.

Enjoy the traveling journey, it is always as worthwhile as the arrival. There are thousands of surprises on the journey south through mountains, kasbahs and oases. And if you don't have time, the 3-day desert tour from Marrakech or Fez is among the options.

What to visit in the Merzouga desert

Once you are in the desert, marvel at its beauty. It doesn't take much more than to sit and gaze at it.

Then, a meeting with the nomads who live behind the dunes to share a tea with them or play a while with the children, is one of the most authentic moments that we can live in this place.

Khamlia

We also use to visit Khamlia, the town whose first inhabitants were originally from sub-Saharan Africa, where you can listen to their Gnawa music and traditional dances in their cooperative of music.

Fossils

Did you know that what is now sand was once a sea? A surprising attraction of the tours to the Moroccan desert in Merzouga is the visit to the Erfoud fossil quarries, and if you want a museum that preserves all kinds of fossils found in this area of the Sahara, or the shops where you can get very valuable copies for decorating your home.

Rissani

And if you have more time, mingle with the local people at the Rissani market, which is famous for selling donkeys. A super authentic experience, which you can complement with a visit to the mausoleum of the founder of the Alawite dynasty and the beautiful garden of the mosque that is in this same city a few km from Erfoud.

Zagora as alternative

Zagora will take you back to the time when the caravans traveled to Timbuktu.

Where to stay

The first option is that you stay in a tent camp at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes if you are in Merzouga, or in the Erg Chegaga if you are in Zagora. It is an experience that you will never forget. You can sleep in a luxury tent, with all the hotel comforts, enjoying glamping. Or in authentic dromedary tents. Look at the dark starry sky, you can also simply sleep under its immensity on the rugs.

Enjoy a second night in one of the spectacular hotels in the surroundings with a swimming pool, they will be the perfect complement to your stay in the Merzouga desert. In fact, you can also stay in small riads that will fully convey the way of life of the desert people.

In all cases, laughter, chatting or dancing around a fire and Berber drums after dinner are moments of joy that enchant forever.

What to do in the desert

There are also endless ways to enjoy this paradise.

Walking to the top of the dunes at sunset or sunrise, and taking a dromedary ride, are simple but fantastic experiences to carry out on a trip to the Moroccan desert. And it is that the desert helps you to realize that in the simple, the essential, there is the sublime.

At night, the desert opens its dome to gaze at as many stars as you can count. Stargazing is a spectacular pastime in the desert of Morocco.

Have fun traveling with us in 4x4 to discover the oases and the magical landscape of these places. We will go through some of the sandy tracks that were used for the Paris Dakar.

The most daring can drive quads or a buggy on an exciting journey through the dunes, or have fun going down the sandy slopes with skis or surfboards.

And you can always learn to play the drums or cook in the riads.

More unknown are the sand baths, which are periodically made for people suffering from rheumatism or bone pain.

Or simply, it is best to do nothing.

Savor the Morocco desert tours

Time seems to stop when we are in the desert. Sit on the sand. Chat. Breathe. Listen to the silence of the desert, from your depths. This is it.

Another of the best ways to savor the Moroccan desert is to spend time at someone's house, or in a riad, to better understand the generous Berber culture of the desert.

And if we talk about savoring, of course gastronomy is another way to get to know the Berber culture of the Sahara. Taste for example the delicious Berber pizza, the madfouna. And don't miss the opportunity to have a tea while enjoying the infinite view of the dunes.

We are sure that once you have traveled to the desert, our home, you will want to return again and again. Each of the Morocco desert tours is a new opportunity for this.
